The Music Teachers' List

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

"Is there any fee to use this service?"

No. This is a free service available to any students looking for teachers or teachers looking for students. All listings are free; teachers will never be charged or even asked to provide a donation.

"Who may be listed here?"

Any person or organization who feels that they can competently instruct others in the techniques and/or repertoire of one or more musical instruments. The teacher need not charge for such services, nor do they require any credentials or formal education to be listed here. It will be the responsibility of a prospective student to determine if a teacher found on our site will be suitable.

Teachers are welcome to mention accreditations or years of playing and teaching experience in their listings. These, and the student's own assessment of a teacher should help make the basis for a "good match" in the teacher/student relationship.

"May I make a hardcopy of a listing from this site?"

Acceptable: You may obtain and print a listing from our website for your personal use for the purpose of locating and contacting teachers or performers.

Not Acceptable: You may not use information from our site or our database to distribute to others, or use for any commercial purpose or public forum. These include: inclusion in a book or magazine or article, use on a web page or gopher or FTP site, posting to USENET, or openly distributing listings on hardcopy or electronic media.

All activity on our database engine is logged. Abuse or misuse is not tolerated.

"We have a music-related web page. Can we link to your site?"

Yes, please do. You don't have to tell us about the link, but we appreciate knowing where links are coming from. If your web page is a non-commercial forum (i.e. local group, instrument-specific forum, music club, etc.) we'd like to know about it and where it is. In the future we may list such forums on a related web page.

Here is a compact link graphic you are welcome to download and use on your website. To install on your page we've included some sample HTML you may cut-and-paste:

"What are the policies for acceptance of listings?"

For an up-to-date guide on our policies, please read this guide. There is also a history of policy changes ordered by date.

We welcome your feedback/commentary on our policies and usefulness of our service. Send us an inquiry with your questions, suggestions, or kudos. We can't guarantee a response to every letter but your suggestions, large or small, will be seriously considered. We Do Listen! and some of our best improvements have come from user suggestions.

"How often can I change my listing?"

As often as you feel necessary. Use our on-line change form for easy editing.

"What order are listings shown by the search engine?"

Our current policy is to list the most recently submitted listings first. The theory behind this is that over time listings become inaccurate. So we list the most recently posted (or edited) information at the top.

"My information has changed and I didn't request it! Now the information is wrong. What do I do?"

Notify us immediately by this form. We hope that no one will abuse the open modification policy of our service, but there is that possibility. We maintain logs of all transactions into our site -- if someone is tampering with your listing, we will take steps to see that it does not happen again.

"I typically get students from three states. How can I modify my listing so it shows up in all three states?"

Our database is not designed to cross-list in such a way. You can post copies of your listing to the other states, but this is not recommended.

You should expect that students will search for listings in states neighboring theirs, if they feel that a commute is reasonable. For this reason, one listing per teacher should be enough.

Multiple listings for one teacher may be rejected if the reviewers feel that the geographical spread is too large.

"I perform but I don't teach. Can I still list here?"

There is no set policy on this yet. We are considering expansions to the database that will make a separate list for performers. For now you may submit a listing to The Teachers List with an indication in the Comments section that you are a performer or performer-for-hire only.

When we upgrade, your listing will automatically move to the Perfomers section of our site.

"Can schools be listed as well as individuals?"

Yes. Put the name of the school in the "Comments" section and be sure to clearly indicate that the listing is for a school. Use the "Name" field for a contact in your organization (a registrar or similar).

"I don't have Internet access. Can I still get listed?"

Yes! Although it may be convenient for prospective students to contact you by e-mail first, an e-mail address is not required to be listed. In order to get your listing posted you may either:

  • Find a friend who has access to the Web and have them submit your entry using this form

  • Send us your submission on a postcard. Write the following information on the card: Name, Address, Telephone number, Hourly Rate, Instrument(s) you teach, Style, and any Comments. Mail the postcard to:
